Public Printer of the United States Bruce R. James has announced that Richard G. (Ric) Davis, an 11-year veteran of the Government Printing Office (GPO) has been named director of the Office of Electronic Information Dissemination Services (EIDS) at GPO. As the director of EIDS, Davis is responsible for GPO Access (, GPO's award-winning Web site that provides extensive collections of Government data from all three branches of Government.

In making the appointment, Public Printer James said, "Ric Davis's thorough knowledge of both the management and the underlying technology of GPO Access make him a tremendous asset to the organization. I have every confidence that, under Ric's guidance, GPO Access will continue to lead the field in its services to users of Government information."

Davis began his GPO career in 1992 as a Program Analyst in GPO's Technical Support Group. In 1994, he joined the GPO Library Programs Service as a Management Analyst, and then went on to head the Electronic Transition Staff. In 1996, he joined EIDS as the Product Services Manager. He was named Assistant Director of EIDS in 2001.

Davis earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science at James Madison University in 1988. He was awarded a Master of Arts degree in Government by the College of William and Mary in 1991. He has also completed additional graduate work at Virginia Tech. Prior to joining GPO, Davis worked for RJR Nabisco.

Davis and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Gaithersburg, MD, with their son.

GPO Access is the leading source of free, official Government information. Its publicly available resources have grown to encompass more than 2,800 separate databases through more than 80 applications including the Congressional Record, the United States Code, GAO Reports, Congressional Bills and Reports, Public Laws, the Federal Register, and many more. In total more than 147,000 titles are available on GPO servers, and more than 93,000 additional titles are linked from GPO Access. Since 1994, GPO Access retrievals have exceeded 1.6 billion, and it is currently averaging 32 million retrievals each month. In addition, GPO Access hosts 20 Federal Web sites including the site for the U.S. Supreme Court ( GPO maintains permanent public access to Government information products residing on GPO Access, as well as through partnership agreements with depository libraries and other institutions. In recognition of the growth and accomplishments of the service, GPO Access has received numerous awards and recognitions, such as the E-Gov 2001 "Trailblazer" award.

Headquartered in Washington, DC, with a total employment of 3,000, the GPO is responsible for the production and distribution of information products and services for all three branches of the Federal Government. Many of the Nation's most important information products, such as the Congressional Record and Federal Register, are produced at the GPO's main plant, a 1.5 million square-foot complex that is the largest information processing, printing, and distribution facility in the world. In addition to its own production facilities, the GPO maintains a pool of thousands of private sector vendors across the country to produce print and other information products for the Federal Government ranging from publications for the Defense Department to Supreme Court reports and tax and census forms.
